Texas Boat Registration Numbers
Texas boats display a TX number on both sides of the bow with the registration decal 3 inches behind it. Here’s how Texas Parks and Wildlife wants numbers and decals displayed.
Texas Registration Number Requirements
Texas boats are registered with Texas Parks and Wildlife, through TPWD or your county tax office. Your number must be:
- Painted on or permanently attached to each side of the forward half of the boat
- Plain vertical block characters at least 3 inches tall
- A color that contrasts with the hull so the number is clearly legible
- A space or hyphen the width of a letter between groups
- Reads left to right on both sides
- Block characters of good proportion
- No other number may be displayed on the forward half of the boat
- The number printed on your decal must match your certificate of number

Where the Texas Registration Sticker Goes
Both sides, toward the rear. The Texas decal goes in line with the TX number and 3 inches toward the rear of the boat, on each side.
Coast Guard Documented Vessels
Coast Guard documented vessels that need Texas registration display only the validation decal, not a TX number, on both sides of the bow.
Common Texas Registration Number Mistakes
- Script, italic or outlined fonts. Texas requires plain block characters.
- Numbers smaller than 3 inches. Measure the finished height, not the font size.
- Missing spaces or hyphens between TX, the numbers and the suffix.
- Low contrast, like silver on a white hull or navy on a dark blue hull.
- Sticker in the wrong spot. Check the placement rule above before you apply your numbers so there's room for it.
