Wisconsin boats are registered with the Wisconsin DNR. Your number must be:

  • Painted on or permanently attached to each side of the forward half of the boat
  • Plain vertical block characters at least 3 inches tall
  • A color that contrasts with the hull so the number is clearly legible
  • A space or hyphen the width of a letter between groups
  • Reads left to right on both sides
  • The prefix is WS, for example WS 1234 AB
  • No other number may be displayed on either side of the forward half of the boat

Where the Wisconsin Registration Sticker Goes

Both sides, toward the stern. Put one decal on each side of the boat, 3 inches aft (toward the stern) of the number and directly in line with it.

Coast Guard Documented Vessels

Documented vessels put the registration decals on the transom, one on each side of the documented name. If the name is on the sides of the hull, the decals can go 3 inches aft of the name instead.

Common Wisconsin Registration Number Mistakes

  • Using the wrong prefix. Wisconsin numbers start with WS, not the postal abbreviation.
  • Script, italic or outlined fonts. Wisconsin requires plain block characters.
  • Numbers smaller than 3 inches. Measure the finished height, not the font size.
